School Counseling

We are dedicated to helping students reach their personal best. We work with students in groups and individually to help them develop academic skills, social and personal skills, and begin to explore future and career options. We also work with parents and other school staff to help create the best educational environment for students.

Our mission:

We strive to provide a comprehensive school counseling program for all students at Grafton Bethel and to help students become positive and productive citizens in our community.  

Student needs are addressed with the following services:

Classroom Counseling Lessons – Throughout the school year, we will be teaching classroom lessons to students in grades K-5. Students will learn about many important topics including:

Group Counseling – Students may participate in small group counseling upon parent or teacher request.
Group counseling topics may include:

• Military Deployment
• Friendship and Social Skills
• Study Skills
• Coping skills
• Self-Esteem
   

Individual Counseling – Students may speak with the counselor individually through parent referral, teacher referral, or self-referral. A student may talk with a school counselor about:

• Academic concerns
• Family changes or concerns
• Peer Relationships and Friends
• Decision-making
   

Family Life Education - Family Life will be taught in the Spring and aligned with the VA Department of Education Standards of Learning. 

Gifted Program Contact – Mrs. Wickre serves as the Gifted Education contact.  Please contact her with questions about the YCSD Extend Program.

Community Referrals – If you are in need of assistance, the school counselor can help by locating community resources.  School counselors may also provide referrals for long-term counseling services.

Confidentiality - Information students share with the school counselor is confidential.  Students' right to privacy is guarded as much as permitted by law, ethics, and school policy.  The school counselor is obligated to break confidentiality when there is potential harm to the student or others, concern of neglect or abuse, or a court of law that requires testimony or student records.  At times, the counselor and school-based staff (teacher, social worker, principal, etc.) will need to exchange information about a student (i.e. how they are coping in class, strategies to help, etc.).  All communication will take place only on a need-to-know basis.
